KUALA LUMPUR: The Government will not impose any censorship of the Internet, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said. He said such a move would be ineffective and could cause dissatisfaction among the people.
He said this immediatelty after Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim confirmed there were plans to develop an Internet filtering system, although only for pornography.
Dr Rais said the move was to protect Malaysian children from online smut.
Speaking to reporters after launching the Majlis Jalinan Rakyat at the people’s housing project at Batu Muda here yesterday, Najib said:
“Such a policy (to filter the Internet) will usually be decided by the Cabinet, but we have no intention to do it because it will be ineffective.
“So far, there is no change in the Government’s policy in this issue.”
Najib said information travels freely in the developing world of information and communication technology.
“If we put a form of control, the people cannot accept it,” he said

In my opinion, It can't be denied that if the government try to control the internet content, Malaysian people might not accept it. It is because, our society today always want to be freedom and love to try something new. We are so 'in love 'with the internet. Even we can sit down facing our computer or laptop for about one whole day surfing the internet. However, as a intelligent Malaysian society, we should be able to differentiate the positive content and the negatives one. Since we do not have right to stop the content from the internet, why don't we just stop ourselves from viewing or surfing the negative information from the internet? It is somehow will proved that Malaysian citizen is ready to move another steps in being a society of a successful county in the world. If the simple thing like filtering yourself in the world of internet is so hard to be done, how we should become a citizen of a successful country? I think this issue is about the people. Do IT Yourself! As a respectful individual, one should be able to control him or herself.
